Title: In the Rain
Characters: Donovan and Key
Pairing: Donovan and Key
Raiting: PG I think
Summary: It's 11:00 pm and Donovan finds Key outside in the rain.
A/N: I'd really hope that people don't judge my writing ability on these. I really am doing these for fun little creative exercises.
Donovan had been searching the house for fifteen minutes trying to find his husband. Of course when such searches ended up futile he always knew where to find him, outside underneath the large oak tree in the backyard. The problem was, it was eleven o’clock at night and it was raining. Still, Donovan peeked outside and sure enough there sat Key, though he at least had the sense to be on the porch.
“Angel, is something wrong?” Donovan asked, sliding open the door and stepping outside.
It was July and normally hot as hell but the night air mixed with the pouring rain made it almost chilly outside. He looked over at Key and saw that his husband was hugging his arms as if he too had felt the chill and immediately Donovan pulled him close.
“Angel?”
“Hmm? Oh no, I’m fine. It’s just so crazy inside sometimes I felt like I could use a bit of fresh air.”
“And rain?”
“Well the rain is just an added bonus really. I love the rain, I used to play in it with Mika when we were little. Ever since coming here the rain has always either left me feeling happy because of the memories or sad because I’m afraid I’ll never see her again.”
“And what do you feel right now?”
Key looked at Donovan and smiled. “I couldn’t feel sad if I wanted to. Not now.”
“Huh?” The comment earned an intelligent remark from the vampire as always. Key laughed in response.
“Because of you of course. Yes I was thinking of Mika and I was getting a little sad but then you came out here and wrapped your arms around me. I’ll be damned if I can feel bad now.”
“Oh… well then good, I’m glad.”
“No one has ever had the effect on me that you have Donovan. You know that, right?”
“I know… and I think that’s fantastic by the way. I’ve never really had an effect on someone’s life before… well, besides Leo’s of course.”
“You saved his.”
Donovan nodded.
“You saved mine too.”
Again, he gave Key a look that said “huh?” without actually vocalizing it this time. The look was enough, and Key laughed once again.
“I mean it! I was a pathetic emo pile of angst before you came. All I did was whine, I didn’t have any friends, I was wasting my life dwelling on the past. And I know I can’t just forget the past but you taught me to live in the present and live for the future. I can’t even imagine going back and being that person again. Not now that we’re married and we have a daughter and… well practically a house full of children though I suppose in that respect you’d most likely be counted as one of the kids.”
Donovan frowned in mock offense. “Hey!”
“Do you deny it?”
“Well… no… not really.”
“You’ve made my life worth living Donovan,” Key said, pulling himself a little closer and bringing his lips up close to his husband’s. “Thank you.”
“You don’t have to-“ Donovan wasn’t able to finish his sentence as Key cut him off with a kiss.
The kiss continued for what felt like ages until Key finally pulled away, the need to breath overwhelming him. He leaned against Donovan for a moment before looking up and smiling.
“What?” Donovan asked.
“You know, I’ve always wanted to make love in the rain.”
There was a pause… a long one. “Oh… really?”
“Mhmm.”
“Well… then… I’d hate to deny you something you’ve always wanted.”
Key took Donovan’s hand before turning off the back porch light. He brought his lips close to his husband’s ear and smiled, his voice barely above a whisper as he spoke. “Under the tree.”
